Car-free Canary Islands

Best Canary Island Without a Car: A Practical Ranking

A car-free Canary Islands trip is completely possible, but the choice of base matters as much as the island. Gran Canaria and Tenerife have the strongest combination of buses, walkable areas and organised excursions. La Graciosa is naturally car-free, but it works better as a short escape than a complete conventional holiday.

The short answer

Gran Canaria is the best all-round island without a car. Tenerife follows closely if you stay in a main hub and use tours for Teide or the north. La Graciosa is the purest car-free experience for one or two days.

The strongest choices

Gran Canaria

#1 · Best overall

Gran Canaria

Las Palmas provides a walkable city-beach base with buses across the island.

  • Las Palmas
  • Las Canteras
  • Coastal buses
  • Tour availability

Trade-off: Remote mountain villages still take planning.

Tenerife

#2 · Best for organised excursions

Tenerife

Main resort and city bases connect well, with abundant tours to harder-to-reach sights.

  • Bus network
  • Many tour pickups
  • Multiple bases
  • Airport choice

Trade-off: Spontaneously exploring the north and south in one trip is harder without a car.

La Graciosa

#3 · Best naturally car-free escape

La Graciosa

No paved roads and no rental cars: explore from Caleta de Sebo by foot, bike or authorised transfer.

  • Car-free by design
  • Walking
  • Cycling
  • Short ferry

Trade-off: Limited services make it better as a short stay or day trip.

La Gomera

#4 · Best guided day trip

La Gomera

Easy to experience on an organised day tour from southern Tenerife.

  • Ferry access
  • Guided circuits
  • Garajonay
  • Compact highlights

Trade-off: Independent travel is less flexible because roads are winding and services limited.
